English Definition

Plant species indigenous to or naturally adapted to the UAE’s arid climate โ€” requiring minimal supplementary irrigation once established, supporting local biodiversity, and earning landscape water efficiency credits under Al Sa’fat and the Pearl Rating System.

Why Native Plants Matter in UAE Landscaping

Native plants are species that occur naturally in a given region and have evolved over millennia to be adapted to the local climate, soils, rainfall patterns, and ecological conditions. In the UAE context, native and locally adapted plants are those suited to the region’s arid to hyper-arid climate โ€” characterised by high temperatures, minimal rainfall, high evapotranspiration rates, saline and sandy soils, and occasional flash flooding. The UAE’s native flora includes some remarkable species that have adapted to survive and thrive in these extreme conditions, including the iconic Ghaf tree (Prosopis cineraria) โ€” the UAE’s national tree โ€” along with species such as Sidr (Ziziphus spina-christi), Samar (Acacia tortilis), and a range of desert wildflowers and succulents.

Water and Environmental Benefits

The primary benefit of native planting in UAE building projects is dramatic reduction in irrigation water demand. Once established โ€” typically after one to two growing seasons โ€” native UAE plants require little or no supplementary irrigation, deriving sufficient moisture from occasional rainfall and soil moisture. This contrasts sharply with introduced exotic species โ€” particularly lush tropical grass lawns and non-adapted ornamentals โ€” which can require daily irrigation in UAE summer conditions and consume enormous quantities of desalinated water.

Research by the Dubai Municipality and Emirates Nature-WWF indicates that replacing exotic planting with native or adapted species can reduce landscape water consumption by 70โ€“80% โ€” a reduction that also decreases the energy cost of supplying that water through desalination and distribution, and reduces the associated carbon footprint of landscape water use.

Native Plants in UAE Green Building Frameworks

Under Al Sa’fat, the specification of native and regionally appropriate plant species is directly credited in the water efficiency category, with additional credits available for eliminating permanently irrigated turf grass from the landscape design. The Pearl Rating System credits native planting under its Natural Systems category, recognising both the water efficiency benefit and the biodiversity value of restoring native ecological communities in developed landscapes. Under LEED, native and adapted planting contributes to both the Water Efficiency credits (through reduced irrigation demand) and the Sustainable Sites credits (through ecological restoration and biodiversity enhancement). Landscape architects working on UAE green building projects are increasingly specifying xeriscaping โ€” a design methodology that organises planting zones by water need and maximises the proportion of zero-supplementary-irrigation native species.
