The Urban Heat Island Effect in UAE Cities
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect occurs when urban areas โ characterised by dense building coverage, extensive dark paved surfaces, reduced vegetation, and significant waste heat generation โ become measurably warmer than surrounding non-urban areas. In the UAE, where ambient temperatures are already among the highest in the world, UHI effects compound the existing heat challenge: urban areas in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can be 2โ5ยฐC warmer than surrounding rural land, particularly at night when urban surfaces release heat stored during the day.
The primary drivers of UHI in UAE cities are: low-albedo (dark) surfaces โ asphalt roads and car parks, dark roofing membranes, and dark facade cladding absorb and retain solar radiation, re-emitting it as sensible heat; reduced vegetation โ impermeable surfaces prevent the evapotranspiration cooling effect that vegetated surfaces provide; waste heat from buildings โ HVAC rejection heat from air-cooled condensers and cooling towers adds directly to the urban heat load; and waste heat from vehicles in high-traffic areas.
Consequences and Mitigation
The consequences of UHI in UAE cities are significant and multi-dimensional. Increased cooling energy demand: every 1ยฐC increase in ambient temperature increases peak cooling load by approximately 2โ4%, raising both energy consumption and peak demand on the power grid. Outdoor thermal comfort and public health: elevated urban temperatures increase heat stress risk for outdoor workers, pedestrians, and vulnerable populations โ a critical concern in the UAE given the large outdoor labour force. Amplified climate change impacts: UHI compounds the warming effects of climate change, accelerating temperature increases in urban areas beyond the global average.
Mitigation strategies at the building and development scale include: cool roofs with high SRI values (minimum 78 under Al Sa’fat); high-SRI paving for car parks and hardscape areas; green roofs and walls providing evapotranspiration cooling; urban tree planting providing shade and evapotranspiration; and permeable paving reducing surface runoff and enabling evaporative cooling. Under Al Sa’fat and LEED Sustainable Sites, UHI mitigation measures earn credits for non-roof hardscape SRI compliance and heat island reduction strategies.
