English Definition

The collection, treatment, and reuse of wastewater from baths, showers, washbasins, and laundry โ€” excluding toilet waste โ€” for non-potable applications such as toilet flushing, landscape irrigation, and cooling tower makeup, reducing potable water demand in UAE buildings by 30โ€“40%.

Understanding Greywater

Greywater is domestic wastewater generated from baths, showers, washbasins, laundry, and kitchen sinks โ€” as distinct from blackwater, which contains faecal matter from toilets and requires more intensive treatment. Greywater is relatively lightly contaminated โ€” containing soaps, detergents, skin cells, hair, and trace organic matter โ€” and can be treated to a standard suitable for reuse in non-potable applications using comparatively simple treatment processes. In a typical commercial or residential building, greywater accounts for 50โ€“60% of total wastewater generated, representing a significant resource that can be redirected from the sewer to productive non-potable reuse.

Greywater Treatment and Reuse Applications

A greywater recycling system in a UAE building typically comprises: collection pipework segregating greywater from blackwater at source; a treatment system โ€” which may include filtration, biological treatment (biofilm reactor or constructed wetland), UV disinfection, and pH adjustment โ€” producing treated water meeting the relevant non-potable reuse standards; a treated water storage tank; and a distribution system supplying the non-potable end uses.

The most common reuse applications in UAE buildings are: toilet flushing โ€” the largest single indoor non-potable demand, accounting for approximately 30% of indoor water use; landscape irrigation; and cooling tower makeup water โ€” where water quality requirements align with the quality achievable from treated greywater. Reuse for cooling towers requires careful microbiological management to prevent Legionella proliferation.

UAE Regulatory Framework

Greywater reuse in the UAE is subject to regulatory requirements that vary by emirate. In Dubai, the use of treated greywater for toilet flushing and irrigation in commercial and residential buildings is permitted subject to treatment to the standards specified in the Dubai Building Code and compliance with Dubai Municipality health and safety requirements. Under Al Sa’fat, greywater recycling systems earn water efficiency credits proportional to the volume of potable water displaced. Design consultants must work closely with the relevant authority at planning stage to confirm the permissible reuse applications and treatment standards applicable to the specific project type and location.
