Thermal Comfort
Primary Comfort Standard
Typical UAE Office Setpoint
Predicted Mean Vote โ Key Metric
Target PMV Range for Comfort
English Definition
The condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment โ defined by ASHRAE Standard 55 and directly linked to occupant productivity, health, and wellbeing in UAE buildings where mechanical cooling is the dominant environment control strategy.
Defining Thermal Comfort
Thermal comfort is defined by ASHRAE Standard 55 as ‘that condition of mind which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment.’ It is fundamentally a subjective state โ influenced not only by the physical parameters of the environment but by individual physiology, clothing, activity level, and cultural acclimatisation. The scientific framework for predicting thermal comfort in mechanically conditioned spaces is Fanger’s Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) model, which combines six variables: air temperature, mean radiant temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, metabolic rate (activity level), and clothing insulation (CLO value) into a predicted comfort vote on a seven-point scale from -3 (cold) to +3 (hot), with 0 representing neutral.
Thermal Comfort Challenges in UAE Buildings
The UAE presents distinctive thermal comfort challenges rooted in its extreme climate and cultural context. Overcooling is arguably the dominant comfort complaint in UAE commercial buildings โ interior temperatures maintained at 20โ21ยฐC by oversized or poorly controlled HVAC systems create discomfort in a population acclimatised to outdoor temperatures of 35โ42ยฐC, and impose unnecessary energy consumption. ASHRAE 55 recommends operative temperatures of 23โ26ยฐC for summer conditions in air-conditioned spaces โ a range that balances comfort for acclimatised occupants with energy efficiency.
Radiant asymmetry is a significant comfort issue in highly glazed UAE commercial buildings: solar radiation transmitted through glazing creates high mean radiant temperatures near the facade, producing discomfort even when air temperature is controlled. External shading and low-SHGC glazing both reduce this radiant component. Local draught from supply air diffusers โ particularly in underfloor air distribution or ceiling-mounted high-velocity systems โ is another common comfort complaint, addressed through correct diffuser selection and air velocity control.
Standards and Green Building Credits
Thermal comfort compliance under Al Sa’fat and LEED requires demonstration that the HVAC system is designed and controlled to maintain conditions within the ASHRAE 55 comfort zone for at least 90% of occupied hours. ISO 7730 provides the European equivalent framework for thermal comfort assessment, widely referenced by UAE consultants working on international projects. The WELL Building Standard v2 โ increasingly specified by premium commercial developers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi โ sets more stringent thermal comfort requirements including post-occupancy comfort surveys, occupant control provisions, and monitoring of actual thermal conditions.
