Irrigation Water Use in the UAE
Irrigation systems are the infrastructure used to deliver water to planting areas โ lawns, shrub beds, trees, and indoor planting โ in a controlled, efficient manner. In UAE buildings with significant landscaped areas, irrigation can represent the largest single category of water consumption, accounting for 40โ60% of total building water use. This proportion is driven by the UAE’s extreme evapotranspiration rates โ hot, dry, windy conditions cause rapid water loss from soil and plant surfaces โ and by the traditional preference for lush green landscaping that demands frequent, intensive irrigation in an arid climate.
Irrigation System Types
Several irrigation technologies are deployed in UAE landscape projects, with significantly different water use efficiencies. Drip irrigation โ delivering water directly to the root zone of individual plants through emitters at low flow rates โ is the most water-efficient method, with application efficiencies of 90โ95%; water is delivered precisely where needed with minimal evaporation or surface runoff. Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) buries emitter lines below the soil surface, eliminating surface evaporation entirely and further improving efficiency. Sprinkler systems โ including pop-up rotors and spray heads โ are less efficient (60โ80% application efficiency) due to wind drift and surface evaporation losses, but remain appropriate for lawn areas. Smart irrigation controllers with evapotranspiration (ET) scheduling โ adjusting irrigation run times based on weather data and calculated plant water demand โ are the most effective management technology for reducing landscape water consumption.
UAE Requirements and Green Building Credits
Under Al Sa’fat and the Pearl Rating System, landscape water efficiency is assessed against a baseline water budget calculated from the planted area, plant types, and local evapotranspiration rates. Credits are earned by demonstrating that the specified irrigation system, plant selection, and scheduling strategy achieves a defined percentage reduction below the baseline. The most effective combined strategies are: native and adapted plant species with low water requirements; drip irrigation for all shrub and tree planting; moisture sensors to prevent over-irrigation; and the use of recycled or harvested water (HVAC condensate or treated greywater) as the irrigation water source โ which simultaneously earns water efficiency credits in both the landscape and water reuse categories.
