English Definition

The controlled use of natural light to illuminate building interiors โ€” reducing artificial lighting energy consumption, enhancing occupant wellbeing and productivity, and contributing to green building certification credits under Al Sa’fat and LEED in UAE buildings.

Daylighting in UAE Building Design

Daylighting is the deliberate use of natural light โ€” admitted through windows, skylights, light shelves, and other apertures โ€” to illuminate interior spaces to levels sufficient for the activities taking place, reducing or eliminating the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. In the UAE, where daylight hours average 10โ€“12 per day throughout the year and sky luminance levels are among the highest in the world due to the clear desert sky, the potential for daylighting to contribute to energy efficiency is substantial โ€” well-designed daylighting can reduce artificial lighting energy consumption by 50โ€“70% during occupied daylight hours.

The Daylighting-Solar Control Balance

Effective daylighting in the UAE requires careful resolution of a fundamental design tension: the same glazing openings that admit natural light also admit solar radiation and heat, increasing the cooling load. The design challenge is to admit sufficient diffuse daylight while excluding direct solar radiation โ€” achieved through a combination of: facade orientation (north-facing facades receive diffuse daylight with minimal direct solar gain in the northern hemisphere, and are preferred for daylighting in UAE buildings); external shading devices that block direct solar radiation while allowing diffuse sky light to enter; high visible light transmittance (VT) but low SHGC glazing โ€” products with a high light-to-solar-gain ratio (LSG) that transmit more visible light per unit of solar heat gain; and light shelves โ€” horizontal reflective elements that bounce daylight deeper into the interior while providing shade to the lower portion of the window.

Metrics and Regulatory Credits

Daylighting performance is quantified through several metrics. The Daylight Factor (DF) โ€” the ratio of interior illuminance to simultaneous exterior illuminance under an overcast sky โ€” is a traditional European metric less suited to the clear-sky UAE conditions. The more appropriate metric for the UAE is Daylight Autonomy (DA) โ€” the percentage of occupied hours in a year during which daylight alone provides at least the target illuminance level โ€” calculated using climate-based daylight modelling (CBDM) with UAE-specific sky conditions.

Under Al Sa’fat, daylighting performance contributes credits in the Indoor Environment category, reflecting the dual benefits of reduced energy consumption and enhanced occupant comfort. Under LEED v4.1, the Daylight credit (IEQ) requires either simulation demonstrating adequate illuminance levels across the occupied floor plate, or physical measurement. The credit recognises the evidence base for daylighting’s positive effects on occupant wellbeing, cognitive performance, and circadian rhythm regulation.
