English Definition

The variety of life โ€” species, genetic diversity, and ecosystems โ€” within a given area, and a key indicator of ecological health whose protection and enhancement is credited under Al Sa’fat, LEED, and UAE environmental regulations in all development projects.

Biodiversity in the UAE Context

Biodiversity encompasses three levels of biological variety: species diversity (the number and relative abundance of different species in an area); genetic diversity (the genetic variation within species populations); and ecosystem diversity (the variety of different habitat types and ecological communities). In the UAE, biodiversity exists within a challenging arid environment but encompasses remarkable ecological richness: from the Arabian Gulf’s coral reefs and seagrass beds to the mangrove forests of Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah, the Al Hajar mountain ecosystems, and the desert habitats of the Empty Quarter.

The UAE is a globally significant location for migratory birds following the East African-West Asian flyway, with major wetland sites at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in Dubai and Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi serving as critical staging and wintering grounds for hundreds of thousands of waterbirds annually. The country is home to iconic native species including the Arabian Oryx (successfully reintroduced from the brink of extinction), Dugong, Hawksbill Turtle, Socotra Cormorant, and the Ghaf tree (Prosopis cineraria) โ€” the UAE’s national tree.

Biodiversity Pressures from Urban Development

Rapid urban development across the UAE has placed significant pressure on local biodiversity through habitat destruction, fragmentation, light and noise pollution, and the introduction of invasive alien species through ornamental planting. Construction projects in coastal areas โ€” particularly those affecting mangrove habitats, seagrass beds, or intertidal zones โ€” require environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and in many cases biodiversity offset measures to compensate for unavoidable habitat loss.

Biodiversity in Green Building Frameworks

Under Al Sa’fat, the Site and Landscape category includes credits for protecting and enhancing biodiversity on and around building sites: specifying native and regionally adapted plant species (which support local pollinator and bird populations); avoiding the removal of mature trees; creating ecological stepping-stone habitats through green roofs, walls, and landscaping; and managing construction activities to avoid disturbance of protected species during sensitive seasons. Under LEED Sustainable Sites, site assessment and restoration credits incentivise biodiversity protection and the restoration of previously developed brownfield sites to ecological function. The UAE Biodiversity Strategy and the national commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) provide the regulatory and policy context for biodiversity protection requirements in EIAs and development approvals.
