English Definition

The scientific study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment โ€” providing the evidence base for environmental impact assessment, biodiversity protection, and ecological restoration requirements in UAE construction projects and green building frameworks.

Ecology and Construction

Ecology is the branch of biology that studies the relationships between organisms and their physical environment โ€” examining how species interact with each other, with other species, and with the abiotic (non-living) components of their environment: climate, soil, water, and topography. For construction professionals, ecological understanding is essential for interpreting environmental impact assessments, implementing biodiversity conditions attached to planning consents, and designing green spaces that provide genuine ecological function rather than merely aesthetic greenery.

In the UAE, several ecologically significant habitat types are directly affected by construction activities: coastal habitats including mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and intertidal mudflats โ€” which provide nursery grounds for commercially important fish species and critical habitat for waterbirds; desert habitats including sabkha (salt flat) ecosystems, sand dune communities, and wadi (seasonal watercourse) ecosystems; and mountain habitats in the Al Hajar range supporting endemic plant species and raptors including the Bonelli’s Eagle.

Ecological Assessment in UAE Projects

For construction projects in the UAE that may affect ecologically sensitive areas, an ecological survey and assessment โ€” conducted by qualified ecologists โ€” is a standard component of the Environmental Impact Assessment process. The ecological assessment documents: existing habitats and species present on and adjacent to the site; the likely impacts of construction on ecological receptors (direct habitat loss, disturbance, fragmentation, pollution); proposed mitigation measures to avoid, reduce, or remedy impacts; and โ€” where unavoidable impacts remain โ€” biodiversity offset measures to compensate for residual ecological losses.

Ecology in Green Building Credits

Ecological principles are embedded in UAE green building rating system credits. Under Al Sa’fat, the Site and Landscape category rewards: conducting an ecological survey prior to site preparation; protecting and retaining existing native vegetation; designing landscape planting to support local ecological communities; and restoring ecological function to degraded site areas. Under LEED Sustainable Sites, the Site Assessment credit requires an ecological assessment documenting soils, vegetation, hydrology, and human use, and the Site Development and Protect or Restore Habitat credits incentivise ecological protection and restoration. The LEED Pilot Credit: Ecological Integrity and Connectivity provides a framework for projects that go beyond site-scale ecology to contribute to landscape-level ecological connectivity.
