Water Harvesting in the UAE Context
Water harvesting is the collection, storage, and utilisation of water from non-mains sources. Globally, rainwater harvesting โ collecting rainwater from roofs and hard surfaces โ is the most widely discussed water harvesting strategy. However, in the UAE, where annual rainfall averages less than 100mm and is highly unpredictable, rainwater harvesting offers limited and unreliable yield for most building applications. The most significant and reliable water harvesting source specific to the UAE context is HVAC condensate recovery.
HVAC Condensate Recovery
Air conditioning systems in the UAE produce substantial quantities of condensate water โ the moisture extracted from humid outdoor air as it passes over the chilled cooling coils of air handling units. In the UAE’s coastal areas, where outdoor air humidity can reach 80โ90% relative humidity in summer, a central chilled water system serving a large commercial building can produce 5โ10 litres of condensate per kilowatt of cooling capacity per day. A medium-sized commercial building with 1,000 kW of cooling capacity could therefore produce 5,000โ10,000 litres of condensate daily โ a substantial non-potable water resource.
HVAC condensate is relatively clean โ it is essentially distilled water with very low mineral content, requiring only basic filtration and disinfection before reuse for irrigation or cooling tower makeup. The low mineral content (hardness) actually makes it preferable to treated municipal water for some irrigation applications, as it avoids the soil salinisation that can occur with long-term application of high-TDS water in arid environments.
Stormwater and Fog Collection
In specific UAE locations โ particularly in the mountainous Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah regions โ stormwater collection during the brief but sometimes intense winter rainfall season can provide meaningful water volumes for landscape irrigation and groundwater recharge. Traditional Arabic falaj irrigation systems represent an ancient form of water harvesting that managed groundwater resources in the region for millennia. Fog collection โ capturing moisture from coastal fog on mesh structures โ is an emerging technology with potential applications in the UAE’s northern coastal areas. Under Al Sa’fat, any documented reduction in potable water demand through harvested water reuse earns water efficiency credits.
