What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised document that communicates verified, quantitative environmental information about a product — based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted in accordance with ISO 14040/14044 and declared in accordance with ISO 14025. EPDs are prepared by manufacturers and verified by independent third-party programme operators, ensuring that the environmental data they contain is accurate, transparent, and comparable. The most widely used EPD standard for construction products in Europe and internationally is EN 15804, which defines the product category rules and impact category indicators applicable to building materials.

Key Environmental Indicators in an EPD

A construction product EPD quantifies environmental impacts across multiple indicators, the most important for green building specification being: Global Warming Potential (GWP) — expressed in kgCO₂ equivalent, this is the embodied carbon indicator, quantifying the product’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions; Acidification Potential; Eutrophication Potential; Ozone Depletion Potential; Primary Energy Demand (renewable and non-renewable); and Resource use — water and materials. The GWP indicator is the most widely used in green building specification, directly supporting embodied carbon calculations for whole-building LCA.

EPDs in UAE Green Building Practice

Under LEED v4.1, the Building Product Disclosure and Optimisation (BPDO) credit for Environmental Product Declarations requires a defined number of permanently installed building products (minimum 20) to have published, third-party verified EPDs — earning one credit point. A second credit point is available for products where the EPD demonstrates environmental impact at least 10% below the industry average for that product category. This incentive structure is driving growing EPD adoption among UAE and regional building product manufacturers.

Under Al Sa’fat, EPDs are referenced as supporting evidence for materials credits, particularly for structural materials including concrete, steel, and aluminium — the three highest-embodied-carbon materials in a typical UAE commercial building. The availability of EPDs from UAE-based manufacturers of these materials has improved significantly as green building requirements have increased, with major suppliers now publishing product-specific EPDs through internationally accredited programme operators.

يُحدِّد EPD لمنتج البناء الآثار البيئية عبر مؤشرات متعددة، أهمها في مواصفات المباني الخضراء: إمكانية الاحترار العالمي (GWP) — المُعبَّر عنها بكيلوجرام مكافئ CO₂، وهي مؤشر الكربون المُجسَّد الذي يُحدِّد مساهمة المنتج في انبعاثات الغازات الدفيئة؛ وإمكانية التحمّض؛ وإمكانية التغذية الزائدة؛ والطلب على الطاقة الأولية.

بموجب LEED v4.1، يستلزم ائتمان إفصاح المنتجات البيئية أن تمتلك منتجات مُثبَّتة دائمة محددة EPDs موثَّقة من جهة خارجية. وتُحفِّز هذه البنية التحفيزية تبني EPD بشكل متزايد بين الشركات الإماراتية والإقليمية المصنِّعة لمنتجات البناء. وبموجب نظام السعفات، تُستخدم EPDs دليلاً داعماً لنقاط المواد، لا سيما للمواد الإنشائية كالخرسانة والصلب والألمنيوم.
