English Definition

A vertical surface — exterior facade or interior partition — covered with vegetation rooted in a growing medium attached to the wall structure, providing urban heat island mitigation, biodiversity habitat, psychological wellbeing benefits, and biophilic design expression in UAE buildings.

Green Wall Systems

A green wall — also called a living wall, vertical garden, or bio-wall — is a vertical surface on which plants are grown, either directly on the wall structure or in modular planting panels attached to a frame mounted on the wall. Green walls differ from green facades, in which climbing plants are trained up the wall surface from ground-level planting: a true green wall system has self-contained growing modules at each level, enabling planting on any vertical surface regardless of height. Green walls are applicable both externally — on building facades, perimeter walls, and external shading structures — and internally — within atriums, lobbies, office interiors, and retail environments.

Green Wall System Types

Two principal green wall system types are commercially available. Living wall panels (felt or pocket systems): plants are grown in felt pockets or modular panels filled with growing substrate, attached to a waterproofed backing board on the wall structure. These systems typically use a continuous drip irrigation arrangement and are suitable for a wide range of plant species. Hydroponic panel systems: plants are grown in an inert hydroponic substrate with nutrient solution delivered through a recirculating irrigation system — enabling installation where weight loading is a constraint and providing precise nutrient management. Both systems require regular maintenance — irrigation management, fertilisation, pest control, and plant replacement — making ongoing operational commitment essential.

Benefits and UAE Design Considerations

Green walls in UAE buildings provide multiple benefits. External facade thermal performance: vegetation shades the underlying wall surface, reducing solar heat gain and external surface temperature by up to 5°C, marginally improving thermal performance of the envelope. Urban heat island mitigation: evapotranspiration from external green walls cools the immediately surrounding air. Biophilic design: internal green walls create a powerful visual connection to nature, supporting occupant wellbeing, stress reduction, and productivity — benefits with strong evidence base and increasing relevance to premium UAE commercial real estate. Acoustic performance: the substrate and vegetation layers provide acoustic absorption and diffusion.

The primary UAE-specific challenge for external green walls is plant selection and irrigation management in extreme heat. Plants must be chosen for heat and drought tolerance; irrigation systems must be designed with redundancy to prevent plant loss during system failures in summer; and drainage must be carefully managed to avoid facade staining. Under Al Sa’fat and LEED Sustainable Sites, green walls contribute to heat island reduction and site ecology credits. Internal green walls can contribute to Indoor Environmental Quality credits through their biophilic design benefits under the WELL Building Standard.
