The total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by a building, organisation, or activity โ expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCOโe) โ and the primary metric for measuring progress toward the UAE’s net zero 2050 commitment.
Understanding Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint quantifies the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a defined activity, entity, or product, expressed in units of kilograms or tonnes of COโ equivalent (kgCOโe or tCOโe). The COโ equivalent metric converts all GHGs โ including methane (CHโ), nitrous oxide (NโO), and refrigerants โ into their carbon dioxide equivalent based on their 100-year global warming potential, enabling comparison and aggregation across different emission sources.
The GHG Protocol โ the most widely used international framework for carbon accounting โ categorises emissions into three scopes: Scope 1 โ direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the reporting entity (on-site combustion, process emissions); Scope 2 โ indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, or steam; Scope 3 โ all other indirect emissions in the value chain, including embodied carbon in purchased materials, supply chain emissions, and end-of-life treatment of products. For buildings, Scope 2 (purchased electricity for HVAC, lighting, and equipment) typically dominates the operational carbon footprint.
Carbon Footprint in UAE Buildings
The carbon footprint of UAE buildings is significantly influenced by the country’s electricity generation mix. The UAE grid was historically dominated by natural gas generation โ producing approximately 0.45 kgCOโ/kWh of electricity consumed โ making electricity consumption in buildings a major source of GHG emissions. As the UAE expands its renewable energy capacity โ through the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Park, Barakah nuclear, and other clean energy projects โ the grid emission factor is declining, progressively reducing the Scope 2 carbon footprint of buildings that improve their energy efficiency.
Reducing Building Carbon Footprints in the UAE
A comprehensive building carbon footprint reduction strategy addresses both operational and embodied carbon. Operational carbon reduction measures include: building envelope optimisation (reducing heat gain and HVAC load); high-efficiency HVAC systems; LED lighting with smart controls; on-site renewable energy generation (solar PV via DEWA Shams Dubai); and connection to efficient district cooling networks. Embodied carbon reduction measures include: low-carbon concrete mixes (supplementary cementitious materials); recycled steel specification; and whole-building life cycle assessment to identify high-impact material substitution opportunities. Under Al Sa’fat and LEED, both operational and embodied carbon reduction are rewarded through credit structures aligned with the UAE’s national net zero 2050 pathway.
