Architect Dame Zaha Hadid, whose designs include the London Olympic Aquatic Centre, has died aged 65.

Iraqi-born, this year she was the first woman to receive the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) Gold Medal in recognition of her work.

She died following a heart attack on Thursday in a Miami hospital, where she was being treated for bronchitis.

Her designs have been commissioned around the world, including Hong Kong, Germany and Azerbaijan.

Collecting her Gold Medal in February, Dame Zaha said she was proud to have been the first woman to win in her own right.

“We now see more established female architects all the time,” she said.

Since her student days in London at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid (born 1950) has been intensely preoccupied with changing our general notions of space – not only in a physical sense, but also socially and culturally. Hadid’s projects are characterized by their dynamic formal qualities of sinuously, curving shapes, or crystallized strata. This sums up as a kind of new Baroque, a sensuous, more vibrant and engaging type of architecture.

Hadid’s projects during the late 1970s and 1980s were marked by a profound understanding of early 20th  Century avant-garde artists and architects. In an attempt to redevelop and make relevant again the formal investigations of Russian Constructivism and Italian Futurism, her projects expressed utopian ideals.

Today, Architects create landmarks projects for all types of functional programs. Their buildings are never bland or mundane, but moreover assertive statements of a particular view, that the world may indeed look different. Their efforts have resulted in a staggering almost one thousand projects throughout the globe, in every scale, from urban design schemes to objects and furniture design.

Along with her strong conceptual and historical awareness, nature’s forms and shapes appear as a recurrent source of inspiration for Zaha Hadid’s architecture. It includes attention to physical contexts and landscapes, whether resulting in layered structures or powerful moving lines but also exploring possible interfaces between patterns and construction.

Zaha Hadid Architects embraced digital drawing early on. This has made the studio able to challenge traditional ways of making architecture. In collaboration with senior office partner Patrik Schumacher, Zaha Hadid has meticulously explored the possibilities of parametric design, allowing for the conception and construction of architecture as seamless flows of energy and matter. Zaha Hadid is the 2004 Pritzker Prize laureate and winner of the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011.

A lot of people spend a lifetime trying to understand the world. A few just try to get the world to understand them. Zaha Hadid, perhaps more important than someone who was merely waiting for their time to come, instead witnessed the world adapting to her.

RIP , the Architect Who Showed Us What the Future Looks Like

Dubai Frame - 2016

Dubai Frame – 2016

The city’s new iconic landmark, Dubai Frame, will be ready for visitors SOON.

The tower’s height can be compared to that of a 50-storey building, and although the bridge’s capacity and cover charge has not been revealed as yet, officials involved in the construction of the project have assured that the probability of it reaching full capacity remains unlikely — so as to ensure the comfort of tourists and visitors alike.

Since construction started at the end of 2013, the Dh160 million project is now close to completion.

The Dubai Frame project consists of two 150 meter towers 9 3 meters wide, connected with a 100 square meter bridge where ample room will be available for visitors to take snapshots of the city’s panoramic view. A cafe will also be available at the top.

The bridge was initially set to be completely made out of glass but, after careful consideration, it was decided to install a 25 square meter glass panel in the middle of it instead. Some people may be afraid to look down, and we wanted to make this iconic building an enjoyable experience for all.

The project is located near the Star Gate games and rides area of Zabeel Park and, according to municipal documents, the tower’s mass was recorded at a staggering 23,453 tones. The site for the landmark tourist and leisure attraction was chosen after extensive surveys of what location would offer the best views of new Dubai and old Dubai through the frame.

The Project is at the final phase of cladding the building, and an external cladding cleaning mechanism will be incorporated in the design by consultants. the panoramic lift will be fixed and the museum will also be set up.

The last phase in Dubai Frame’s construction includes panelling the photovoltaic tiles to produce solar energy, where the glass elevator will offer unobstructed views as visitors travel up and down the sides of the frame.

At the top, visitors will have a bird’s-eye view of Old Dubai as they look towards Al Karama, Umm Hurair, Bur Dubai and Deira, and as they turn around, will see the high-rise towers and development projects of New Dubai in stark contrast.

Once opened to the public, visitors will have access to the museum located on the ground floor, which is set to showcase artefacts representing new and old Dubai, and will be equipped with multimedia presentations narrating the progress of Dubai’s rapid transformation from a small fishing and trading town by the sea to a modern metropolis.

The project is expected to attract 2 million visitors a year.

Dubai Frame Status:

Dubai Frame to be finished in 2016.

It is predicted that it will become a major tourist destination in the city – one of the buildings, like the Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab, that all visitors to Dubai will feel they need to see.

The Dubai Frame could be open just in time for National Day if the current schedule goes smoothly to plan
